cazooa there’s typically a wall (or logarithmic limit) between listening and performing.. often people in the audience feel ‘self-conscious’ and ‘put-on-the-spot’ once aural attention is redirected to their person; hypersensitive even. why? empathetic harmonizing? emotional resonance? what i dig about hasan’s work is that it retains the mystique of improvisation; even in his own [exceptionally skilled] hands, i get a sense that he’s on the same ride as the ‘listener’. i’m on my 3rd

about

MANAMA AND OTHER SPICES was originally recorded in June 2009. The impetus behind the project was a need to question the historic production approach of solo oud albums. By this, I mean the cliché sonic placement of the soloist and the instrument in the absolute center of a given recording with a jarring artificial reverb in the background. As an oud player myself, I also found it necessary to question the idea of ‘genius’ or ‘master’ oud players through historic recordings.

Over time, MANAMA AND OTHER SPICES (in its original form), also became a sonic map of the souq area in Manama. Many of the locations and their meanings have changed since the original recording. I find it fascinating to revisit the project nearly a decade later. I consider MANAMA AND OTHER SPICES (in its original form) as one of my first sound art-informed works, which is another reason behind my partiality to it. The original version of this album also included conversations I had with my father as we walked through the souq, offering a glimpse into my personal world and my connection with my father.

The difference between the 2009 and 2020 edition is structural. In the 2009 edition, I divided the album into 15 tracks, with only 3 of them actually including my improvisation on the oud. Those improvisations in themselves were an attempt to challenge the classical way of improvising on the instrument, particularly in phrasing and the narrative arch. The 2020 edition reconnected the 15 tracks into one track, which was the original intention I had. Listening to the album this way gives it a new cohesion that I find more in the spirit of the original idea of the project.

Happy listening!
